Our homes have the opportunity to provide us with a safe haven of comfort and serenity. When we are out in the ‘concrete jungle’ we are both consciously and subconsciously engaged with massive amounts of energies prodding our senses. Our nerves are bombarded with immense stimulation of all kinds. Creating a Meditation Sanctuary provides an environment you will look forward to coming home to, a welcoming place to diffuse from the energies of the day.

Creating a space of comfort and serenity can be an awesome, inspirational love nest for you. It’s a Sanctuary—a peaceful place you create to take a break and re- ground yourself.

So what does a Meditation Sanctuary look like and how do you build your Mediation Sanctuary—on a budget?

We’ve all seen the stunning photos of a lotus garden, with streams of running water cascading over rocks, on a picture perfect day. Yes, that’s a beautiful environment, but building your own sweet little Sanctuary spot can be as simple as a corner in your home with a candle, maybe some incense on a small table, and a pillow on the floor. The area can hold pictures of things that make you smile and fill you with love. Having a live plant in your Sanctuary will add the element of nature as well as adding some additional oxygen in the room.

You can add crystals or statues or anything you want in your Sanctuary. The point is to just begin with whatever you already have that provides you with feelings of comfort and peace.

The most important part of the process is to honor your Sanctuary by providing time alone for yourself. It may be necessary to use your earphones and play soothing music to drown out the noise by the others living with you in your space.

Creating a space with no distractions is important. Remember you are letting go of the energies and the distractions from your day…not adding to them.  Most of us do not live alone, so it’s important to sit down with the people living with you and have a conversation of how important this is to you. You’d like at least 10 – 20 minutes of quiet time to yourself each day.

Just think what happens when you add your own daily stimulation to those living with you- that’s a lot of intense energy! At some level everyone discharges excess energy. The release may come through complaining about your day- your boss- your mom- your whatever, or picking a fight with those you live with, or blaming someone or something. Or you may choose to numb your energetic overload with alcohol, drugs, video games, mindless television binging or over eating. We think we are chill’n but we are only overdosing with more stimulation. It’s not that you can’t add more stimuli, it’s just a good idea to discharge excess energy from your day before adding more.

Without grounding ourselves first before adding additional stimuli we’re just adding to the bombardment to our senses! This adds to the cycles of overload to our system until chronic stress creates physical breakdown. A change in the way we release our excess stress is critical to creating a happy and healthy life.

A focused lifestyle where you are consciously creating a balance with your energetic stimuli gives you the chance to re-energize in healthy ways. I promise after you mediate in your sanctuary the people in your environment will experience a much more pleasant energy from you. And you will feel great! It may take some time to perfect your process, but it is SO worth it.

Grab a corner, your ear buds if you live with others, light a candle, close your eyes and breathe. If your mind wanders, its okay. Just acknowledge your thoughts, and empty your mind again. You’ll refresh your whole nervous system by tapping into your inner world!
